Running 2021 Highlights: What a phenomenal year! And yes, I am referring to 2021. For the second time in my life, I “collected runs” from 52 different places in 52 consecutive weeks. Not bad for a year that included 2 months of downtime for surgery and a host of COVID travel restrictions.
I “collect runs” as we travel, exploring each new city on foot and taking away a Nike+ Run route map and photos. This year gave plenty of opportunity to add to my collection. Domestic travel began with Washington DC, the Blue Ridge Mountains, “Bombingham”, and visits to family in the Land of Ahs.
The Big Trip
Then in June, Jean and I left Charlotte for Zagreb, Croatia, beginning a six-month trip across through 12 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle-East. Running 2021 got more interesting! Croatia was our biggest surprise; the Dalmatian Coast is beautiful. Running highlights included the Nile, Danube, Rhine, and Avon rivers, the Alps, Greek Islands and more. Somehow, via vaccines, masks, common sense and a little luck, we were able to outrun COVID as well. Here are some of my favorite run pics from 2021:
Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, Croatia
Reflections in Sibenik, Croatia
Big Fish / Little Fish in Hvar, Croatia
Miljacka River in Sarajevo, Bosnia
Alexander at Dawn in Thessaloniki, Greece
WWII Flack Tower in Vienna, Austria
Old Communist Radio Building in Bratislava, Slovakia
The Canal in Colmar, France
Sunset in Alexandria, Egypt
Dawn on Santorini, Greece
Old Town Chania on Crete, Greece
Banksy Original in Bristol, UK
Great Park in Windsor, UK
Paracelsusweg Park in Baden-Baden, Germany
Monastery at Bol on Brac, Croatia
Pulteney Bridge on Avon in Bath, UK
Brush Creek on the Plaza in Kansas City, USA
Citygarden Sculpture Park in St. Louis, USA
The literal “Big Trip”, when I fell into the sea in Dubrovnik. The scar is a nice souvenir I guess.
End of the Line
I retired the colors in our final stop abroad after running Barbado’s Miami Beach one last time. Holes in the socks, holes in the shoes, holes in the shirt. RIP, and thank you for your service!

Here’s hoping for a great 2022… Happy New Year all!
December means it is time for the recap of Running 2024. The Run Collection has been updated with paces from Cape Fear to Casablanca, Asheville to Ambleside, Toledo to Tanzania. Here is Running 2024. Enjoy!
WowMark! Didn’t know you did that much running!
